Our Daily Bread: The Posture of An Open Hand (Part 2)

Imagine always being provided for without fail. Guaranteed.

The biblical story of Exodus tells of how God provided for the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness. The first day that manna appeared, the Israelites gathered this ‘bread from heaven’ that tasted like wafer made with honey. For five straight days, manna appeared on the ground enough to last just that day, but on the sixth day, they had a double portion to last them for two days. Then God told the Israelites they would have manna every day until they reach the Promised Land.

Day after day, and every day for the next 40 years, God sustained them in the desert; they lacked nothing. And not just with food, their clothes and sandals also did not wear out, nor did their feet become swollen.

Think about it. The younger generation of Israelites grew up to this kind of life – being provided for sufficiently with their daily bread and all their needs. There must have come a time when they no longer questioned, worried or doubted that God is good and that his love for them is unfailing.

So centuries later, when Jesus prayed the Lord’s Prayer and mentioned asking God for ‘daily bread’, the Jews knew what he was referring to. It wasn’t about asking that God may provide, but knowing that God does always provide, just as He had done so in that wilderness long ago.

Reflect on this:
When we pray for our needs, have the posture of an open hand: preparing ourselves to receive. Trusting and knowing that God will provide, because He is good and loving toward us.

Take this to heart (again and again):
And my God will supply every need of yours according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
