Why Does God Love a Cheerful Giver?

This is a devotional on giving all of us for the One Who Is Worthy. And yes, this includes giving of ourselves, our time, our gifts, our space, our heart, our service and our money.

Now when it comes to giving, there’s a big difference in the attitude between ‘obligation’ and ‘joy’ (see 2 Corinthians 9:7). Obligation causes us to give because we are asked, or we are pressured, or it’s the right thing to do. And sadly, people can do the right thing without being cheerful in their obedience. Obligation limits the amount we give, because our attitude says “that’s good enough, I’ve done my part.” Obligation causes us to decide in our hearts to give only just enough, and perhaps reluctantly if we have to give more.

But JOY is the fruit of the Spirit behind generosity. Joy is what makes you give extravagantly and without regard to yourself. It’s you giving out because of the rich gift of salvation you received. The one who sows generously will get a generous crop!

Do you know why God loves a cheerful giver?

  1. Because your generous, cheerful giving meets the needs of others and cause them to give glory to God, and the Kingdom is advanced (2 Cor. 9:11-12).
  2. Because you become more like Jesus, who gave generously to us in the first place.
  3. Because you trust that God will generously provide all you need (verse 8) and you know He never fails His promises.

Reflect on this
How and where can you give of yourself generously this week?

Take this to heart
“And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others…Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.” (2 Corinthians 9:8, 11)
