The amazing thing about God is that He is always directing our steps. Whether we are to go through a certain path or not, whether to stop or continue, God directs our steps…if we are always listening to His prompting. Our desire as His sons and daughters is to always follow where He leads, for He always leads us where we would be better off.
When we went bike riding and noticed two of our companions were falling behind, I decided to stop and wait for them. After a while, I had an inkling to go back towards them and check on them. It was as if the Holy Spirit was prompting me to go back. I remembered this verse from Isaiah.
Your own ears will hear him.
Right behind you a voice will say,
“This is the way you should go,”
whether to the right or to the left.
As much as I wish I could say, I paid attention to the voice and actually went back, I decided to push forward, for I was close to the end of our goal. The entire time I was riding forward, I kept thinking about them and how they were faring.
When I reached the finish line, we continued to wait for them. After 10 minutes, one of them emerged and the last one was still behind. Finally, our last companion emerged after another 10 minutes. When we asked what happened to him, he said he had a leg cramp and had to stop to stretch his leg to get rid of the cramp.
It was then that I realized why God was prompting me to go back and check on them. Our friend made it back eventually and things could have been worse. But, I realized something that day. When God speaks, pay attention and heed what He is saying.
Sometimes, in life, we decide to do things or go forward where the Lord has directed us otherwise. We must decide to heed the prompting of the Spirit and learn how to listen for He leads us continually.
Sometimes…I should trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledge Him and He directs my paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Reflect on This:
What would your life be like if you always listened to the small still voice directing you where you should go…maybe God wants to use you to change someone’s life?
You can ask God to enable you to hear His promptings, the next time you heed His voice, may be for your own good…or help change someone else’s life.
