What if someone told you the secret to being happy and living a very satisfying life is very simple, would you be interested? Of course you would be! Who wouldn’t want to be happy and satisfied? However, the secret to being happy and satisfied is much simpler than we think…are you ready? Here it is…
Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. — Psalm 37:4
Delighting in the Lord…what does that mean really? It simply means that our hearts find peace and fulfillment in Him. And, when this is the case, in which we find our worth and satisfaction in Christ, this verse says that He will give us the yearnings of our hearts. Does this mean that if we go to Bible study and church every Sunday, God will give us a Mercedes Benz or a Ferrari? Nope.
The Hebrew word for delight is “anog” which when transliterated means to be “soft, delicate, pliable” and to “live or spend in enjoyment”. So, if we are to be “soft and delicate” and “living in enjoyment” with the Lord, then we are open to His ways, His will, and everything else that He wants. We become more “pliable” to His wants or desires. Eventually, His desires become our desires.
So, when our desires are aligned with His desires, He gives us the longing of our hearts…which originated from Him in the first place. When we delight in Him, our desires will never go unfulfilled!
Many people delight in other things such as material wealth, position, financial security, and other temporary things of this world…and still not be satisfied. We will never be “happy” with the things this world has to offer. But, if God is the source of our joy and nothing else, He will give us our needs…and even grant us our “wants” as our hearts’ desires begin to parallel His will.
There is a song by Kutless called “Draw Me Close” and the chorus goes like this:
You’re all I want. You’re all I’ve ever needed.
You’re all I want. Help me know You are near.
You are my desire. No one else will do.
‘Cause nothing else could take Your place
To feel the warmth of Your embrace.
Take This To Your Heart:
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. 1 John 2:15-17
Reflect on This:
Have you come to a place in which God is the only one who satisfies you? You’re so satisfied with Him that no one else will do. You fervently seek Him and His ways that nothing else satisfies…only Him…when you can get to that point…only then will He grant you the true desires of your heart. Until you are able to do this…nothing else can satisfy you and the current longings of your heart.
Are you willing to give it ALL your life and concerns to God?
